Unqualified absolutism is arguably the favorite form of absolutism among Christians, and we can thank Augustine of Hippo, Immanuel Kant, John Murray, and Charles Hodge for that.

Background

Simply put, unqualified absolutism says that there are no exceptions for moral absolutes, because they never conflict and sin is always avoidable.

Augustine’s Version

Bishop Augustine of Hippo firmly believed in the idea that the most important thing to protect was one’s chastity in both the soul and body, especially the soul.

In the case of lying, Augustine argued that it is never allowed because it would weaken the Christian faith, and cause doubt and scrutiny by others. Even if one is faced with something
