    • characters speak through FILTERS
    • know the personality of your characters, even the minor ones
    • every piece of dialogue should have a purpose and a goal
    • disagreement =/ conflict; use the plot to trigger conflict
    • allegories are great ways to have dialogue
    • “yes, and…” is also helpful

    • characters don’t know exactly how they’re feeling, so they don’t tell you
    • do use subtext and show readers what the character is feeling
    • script format might be helpful for your first manuscript
    • don’t make all your characters sound the same (grammar, slang, canter, etc.)
    • don’t overuse [[dialogue tags]]
    • keep your dialogue fast-paced & to the point
